I’ve known many people who choose to do the tree in a certain fashion.
My question to you:
What kind of tree do you use or did you grow up with: real or fake?
Family stories are appreciated.

Tree Debate.

I love this blog topic!
I have to tell you, when my dad was growing up, his mom always had this aluminum artificial tree. He said it was on a rotating base, and lights shone on it from below that changed color, so it looked like the tree itself was changing colors. According to my dad, it was the ugliest tree ever!
When I was a kid, we always had an artificial tree. My brother, sister and I decided one year that we *really* wanted a real one. I remember liking it just fine. However, we soon went back to an artificial tree.
Now that I'm in my own place, I also got an artificial tree. I know it doesn't have the smell of a real tree and maybe doesn't look quite as nice as a real tree, but I think it's got to be better for the environment than a real tree, especially if we use it for a few years. I got some LED lights for the balcony (they're more expensive, but they're better for the environment and last longer), but I couldn't afford them up front for the tree this year. I think I'll do that next year!
Speaking of which, I went to the Denver Botanic Garden's Blossoms of Light yesterday (it was *so* beautiful!), and they used more than a million LED lights. It was so beautiful, and since they create almost no heat, they don't melt the snow, so you see the light shining through the snow :)
Lovely :)
What's your tree like, Sam?
Wowsies - that artificial tree sounds pretty crazy!
Growing up, I had a real tree - my dad would always choose the best one! One year, the tree actually began to grow in our living room and my parents were able to keep it until FEBRUARY!! It was pretty amazing.
For the past few years, we've had an artificial tree, but we've never spent the money on a good one - so there are always holes and broken branches. I think because we have our own place now, I'm going to make Jim go find me a good real one! Of course, I'm not excited about picking up all of the needles off the ground - but it will do!!
We always had real trees while growing up. The whole family would drive over to the tree patch (or whatever you call it) and pick the best and largest possible. We would all contribute (my mom might argue with that) in decorating it with multiple colored lights, ornaments, and tinsel (big pain). The ornaments were beautiful and many of them were old-fashioned traditional. We would also use garland and tinsel (horrible to clean up). Our home always had the most beautiful trees.
I think that both real and artificial trees turn out great. However, if one doesn't mind the hassle, then I believe that the look and smell of a real tree is the better choice. There is just something about the tradition and authenticity that it holds.
Great point, Jessica! Your trees probably always looked better than my mom's - she would NEVER allow for tinsel BECAUSE of the mess and hassle it was...
That's carried on because NOW Jim also won't let me get ANY tinsel. eh gash.
Eh gash is right! ugh...
Real...it's the way to go! There really was no organization to the tree...it always looked like the kids had done it. Bethany and I have a homemade ordamant. It's a huge red star with a HUGE picture of her and I on it. We try to always put it in front of the tree so everyone can see it. Somehow though it gets moved to the back and we are always trying to get it to the front!
